Devoted Health Has Successful Funding Raise
Kudos to Devoted Health for its successful Series E funding raise. Devoted has been one of the few very successful insurtechs. It has excelled in the Medicare Advantage (MA) market as a startup. Run by career veterans with discipline, it is giving big plans a run for their money in some markets. Devoted’s record is very different to some of the other insurtechs, who cratered this year or are performing poorly.

Buchanan Right On Scoring Reform
Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-FL and chair of the Ways and Means health subcommittee, wants a bipartisan group of lawmakers to work on legislation to revise the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) scoring techniques to include long-term savings from preventive healthcare. Others have backed changes too. Without getting into the technical details of CBOs methodology (I often see it as too static and not enough dynamic), the idea of focusing on longer term savings for prevention and similar investments is wise.

Wide Variations In Hospital Billing Practices
Great study, authored by Dr. Marty Makary and other leading academics, on hospital billing quality. Among the study’s findings, which were published in JAMA Network:
–33% of hospitals sue patients who can’t afford to pay
–45% do not provide reliable itemized bills
— 63% did not meet national billing quality standards
The authors see a wide range in practices, from institutions who have compassionate billing practices to ones that practice price gouging & predatory billing.
Makary, author of two books (my favorite is The Price We Pay: What Broke American Healthcare), is a leading advocate for price and payment reform at hospitals. He has personally intervened in many unfair billing cases from hospitals on behalf of individuals. A leading light in healthcare.
